🔒 Privacy-First Approach
Key Surf respects your privacy. We don't collect, store, or transmit any of your personal data. Everything stays on your device.
1. Information We Don't Collect
Key Surf is designed with privacy as a core principle. We explicitly do NOT collect:
- Your browsing history or websites you visit
- Your bookmarks or personal data
- Your custom commands or shortcuts
- Your search queries or commands entered
- Any personally identifiable information
- Usage analytics or tracking data
- IP addresses or location data
2. How Key Surf Works
Key Surf operates entirely on your local device:
- Local Storage: All your custom commands and settings are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API
- No External Servers: The extension doesn't communicate with any external servers or send data anywhere
- Bookmark Access: When you use bookmark search, the extension only reads your existing bookmarks locally - no data is transmitted
- Tab Information: The extension can access tab titles and URLs only when you explicitly use relevant commands, and this information never leaves your device
3. Permissions Explained
Key Surf requests the following permissions, and here's exactly why:
Storage Permission
Used to save your custom commands and extension settings locally on your device. This data is never transmitted anywhere.
Tabs Permission
Allows the extension to work on all websites and access tab information when you use commands like "copy" to copy text from the current URL. No browsing data is collected or stored.
Bookmarks Permission
Enables the bookmark search feature (bm command) by reading your existing bookmarks. This happens entirely locally - your bookmarks are never sent to any server.
4. Data Synchronization
Key Surf uses Chrome's built-in sync storage to synchronize your custom commands across your devices. This synchronization:
- Is handled entirely by Google's Chrome sync service
- Only syncs your custom command shortcuts (not browsing data)
- Is encrypted by Google's infrastructure
- Can be disabled by turning off Chrome sync in your browser settings
- Follows Google's privacy policies for Chrome sync data
5. Third-Party Services
Key Surf does not integrate with any third-party analytics, tracking, or advertising services. The extension is completely self-contained.
The only external links in the extension are:
- Support/donation links (Venmo, PayPal) - only accessed if you choose to support development
- These links open in new tabs and are governed by those services' privacy policies
6. Updates and Changes
If we ever need to update this privacy policy:
- We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page
- Material changes will be communicated through the Chrome Web Store update notes
- We will never retroactively change our commitment to not collecting your data
7. Your Rights
Since we don't collect your data, there's no data for us to delete, modify, or export. However, you can:
- Delete all extension data by removing the extension from Chrome
- Clear your custom commands through the extension's settings
- Disable Chrome sync to prevent command synchronization across devices
8. Security
Key Surf is built with security in mind:
- All code runs locally in your browser's secure extension environment
- No network requests are made by the extension
- The extension follows Chrome's security best practices
- Regular security reviews are conducted on the codebase
9. Children's Privacy
Key Surf is safe for users of all ages. Since we don't collect any personal information, there are no special considerations for users under 13 years of age.
🛡️ Our Commitment
Key Surf will always prioritize your privacy. We believe productivity tools should empower you without compromising your personal data. This extension is built by developers who value privacy and want to create tools that respect users' rights to digital privacy.
